John is a Research Associate at University of California Berkeley. His work is in the field of remote sensing and Geographic Science Information, which is a fancy way of saying that he maps things. He is currently working on projects to monitor the spread of sudden oak death in California. This work includes web design for a site that maps the occurrence of sudden oak death and allows the public to map suspected cases of the disease.
Prior to this work, John attended Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he received his BA in geography and MA in GIS. It was here that he first became interested in environmental justice and food-related issues.
John dedicates most of his free time to cooking and reading about food. Particularly, he is interested in alternative food systems, which can reduce the environmental and health impacts of current food systems. In his view, an environmentally and economically sustainable future must include a transformation of how we eat.
