Dear friends and supporters,
OFC was recently featured in OaklandSeen, a new online newspaper that serves as a "model of media and community engagement to create a platform for issues important to the Oakland community." (article link below) As our mission continues to reach people here in Oakland, our aim is to reach the hearts and minds of Oakland's youth.
In the OaklandSeen Article "From Blight to a Tasty Bite, Growing Food to Root a Neighborhood" ,by Tracy Watson, you will see a photo of me holding a delicious plate of food. It's made by Kevin Jackson, a youth intern of the Purple Lawn Cafe youth. Kevin and I have been working together for the last two years. On many occasions, he has shared sincere gratitude with me for for creating an opportunity for him to be involved with OFC. He recently graduated from high school and he now attends the College of Alameda studying business. Despite the recent loss of 4 high school friends to neighborhood gun violence, Kevin continually challenges his fears of traveling in east Oakland by coming to work me with me at the Oakland Community Farmers Market every Saturday. There are many youth here in Oakland just like Kevin who need our support today.
I encourage you to make a financial contribution of $10-$50 to OFC today. Supporting our efforts help us reach more youth like Kevin. Youth interns are paid $300 per month. Not only do have a safe, supportive space to work in, they gain a sense of what's going with the health of our community by working with OFC. Through Food Justice, our youth interns learn how to create healthy food solutions such as the Purple Lawn Cafe, making our neighborhoods safe, healthy places to live.
Thank you, again, for your continued support!
