SATURDAY July 4th is Youth and Families Day!
Happy Fourth of July Everyone! In celebration of everyone’s favorite holiday we will be starting off the month with our First Youth and Families Day at the Laurel Community Farmers’ Market! The market is located at 4173 Macarthur in the parking lot of the Laurel Office Center and is open SATURDAYS from 10am-2pm.
Youth and Families day is a way for OFC to show our appreciation for all the families in the community that have supported us! We’ve got all sorts of things planned: Live musical performances throughout the day by local favorite Iya Khan, games, activities and face painting for kids as well as an OFC raffle to be announced at the end of the day! Come by and check out the festivities and support our awesome vendors: JP and family of J&P Organics, Biscotti di Bianchi, Bee Healthy Honey, World on a String Jewelry and new vendor Mee Vang of Patao Farms from Fresno! Plus a fresh-made meal being served up by the Purple Lawn Café! Come celebrate the Fourth with OFC!

SATURDAY July 18th is the Grand Opening of OFC’s Youth-run Smoothie Booth!
The Purple Lawn Café has become a mainstay at the OFC Laurel Community Farmers’ Market, providing customers with fresh, healthy, affordable meals prepared by hard-working youth employees of East Oakland. PLC Manager, Kevin Jackson, and the rest of the PLC youth staff have come up with some phenomenal recipes such as stir fry bowls with spicy sausage, tofu nuggets with home fried potatoes and the ever popular chicken and kale adobo! Now with the summer upon us, our dedicated youth interns decided that they wanted to take PLC one step further, expand production and open a BRAND NEW smoothie booth at the Laurel Community Farmers’ Market at 4173 Macarthur Blvd on Saturdays from 10am-2pm! Farm fresh fruit and organic ingredients will make up these delicious treats! Come by the market and cool off with some fresh made smoothies courtesy of PLC youth staff!

MONDAY July 19th is the WORLD AIDS Walk in San Francisco
HIV in the U.S. is far from over -- the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the United States, and a new infection occurs every 9 1/2 minutes. And nearly 30% of those living with HIV in the U.S. are women, up from 8% in 1984. Women Organized to Respond to Life-threatening Disease (WORLD) was founded in 1991 to provide services to women and families impacted by HIV in the Bay Area and nationally. This year Oakland Food Connection is proud to support WORLD's essential work by joining and asking our community to donate to WORLD's AIDS Walk Team this year! Every dollar you donate to a staff, board member or new walker goes directly to support services for women and families impacted by HIV. Just go to http://tiny.cc/clHN4 and make your contribution today! For more information check out: http://www.aidswalk.net/sanfran/index.html

Artist Sylvia La
Good friend of Oakland Food Connection and Oakland based artist Sylvia La is looking to support OFC and the food justice movement by creating a mural on the outside wall of OFC’s office building in East Oakland. In order to take on this amazing project Sylvia must raise between $2,000-5,000 to cover all the necessary expenses! If you are interested in supporting Sylvia in this project please contact us at (510) 482-1898 or info@foodcommunityculture.org. Thank you! For more information about Sylvia and her artwork, check out her website: http://www.sylviala.com/

Saturday, June 20th was the grand opening of the OFC Food Pantry—and what a success! Our youth interns and volunteers have been hard at work for the past few weeks packing bulk food and spices, making labels, doing inventory and putting the finishing touches on the space.
We are happy to announce that the pantry will be open three days a week:
Wednesdays from 12pm-4pm
Fridays from 12pm-5pm and
Saturdays from 10am-2pm
Come by and see what the OFC Food Pantry has to offer! Organic bulk food, spices, tea, oils and more! At some of the best prices around—and ask about our membership program for added deals on top of our already low prices!
