Put your tax dollars where your heart is!
If you could choose where your tax money went all the time, what kind of system would your $ support?
Over the past few weeks, the US government has sent out over $50 billion in rebate checks - and retail sales have have skyrocketed. According to a recent associated press article (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi? f=/c/a/2008/06/13/BULK1188CS.DTL), retail sales jumped by the largest amount than within in 6 months. In the next few weeks, most of the rest of us will receive George Bush's "economic stimulus package" - $ intended to boost the U.S. economy. Lets stimulate the economy we believe in.… Lets put our tax dollars where our hearts are
On July 1st OFC will launch it's 8-week youth internship program. We recently selected five 8th grade applicants from E.C. Reems Academy of Technology and Arts, and 8 youth from Unity High School. Consider donating a significant portion of your tax rebate to Oakland Food Connection to help stimulate a new food economy.
Your dollars will:
- help train young people from East Oakland in business planning: each youth typically receives a stipend of $25-40 per day for 5 hours of work. -fund youth nutrition education and cooking classes to develop the Purple Lawn Café, a featured student-run mobile café that will happen at OFC's weekly community food market launching late August. -maintain two school gardens and one large backyard garden. -bring a new and innovative community food market to East Oakland (farmers market). "Healthy Food for All"
As big-retail benefits from the recent increase in sales, take a moment to remember you have the power to use your dollars to change the lives of 8 youth and countless community members who will be touched by their work.
In peace and solidarity,
Jason Harvey Director Oakland Food Connection jharvey@foodcommunityculture.org
